I am addicted to BBC News online, especially the section called Reality Check. This section analyses news items and provides information so you understand the significance of what’s happening. That is “the poop of the scoop”.
I have told you about how England is now making customers pay for shopping bags in order to reduce the use of single-use bags. It has worked wonderfully as the use is down by about 85%.
So the next question is: “Is it better to use paper, plastic or reusable?” This article explains it.

Basically, the answer is it depends on how many times you reuse a bag. That is the key to making it environmentally responsible; the more times you use it, the better for the environment.
I use reusable shopping bags all the time and have for fifteen years. Yes, I do it for the environment, but also I am lazy and don’t like carrying out the garbage. That, and I find those plastic bags build up in the corners and take over my life until I have a cleaning fit one day and end up throwing them all out.
We sell these reusable produce bags if you want to move your environmental concerns up another notch.
So what is new in the store? We are just restocking the same old reliables.
First, we got more of those good rubber gloves and also those scrubby things.
Do you want to toss your rubber gloves because they stink? Just turn them inside out and throw them in the washing machine with your linen load. Use cold water and add a good slug (½ to 1 cup of vinegar). Don’t put them in the dryer, just hang to dry. Then you have to poke the fingers back the right way.
This poking bit is tedious both ways. I get the kids to do it here. Or you can use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke them back out.
Second, do you need good cleaning cloths? We have Microfiber Cleaning Cloths. I find I clean my bathroom more often if the supplies are sitting under the sink, waiting to be used. If I have to go downstairs to get the stuff, I am on to other things.
Third, we renewed the supply of Bar Keepers Friend. I did a quick internet search and found that this product is biodegradable and safe for septic systems because it does not include harsh chemicals; it uses oxalic acid as the cleaning ingredient.
Bar Keepers Friend was developed in 1882 when a chemist noticed that when he cooked rhubarb in a pot, it also cleaned the pot. (Right now my feminist self is rolling my eyes and saying “he was cooking”, yeah right!)
I digress, I like it because it is easy on my hands and doesn’t leave me gasping for breath.
Fourth, we have the large size drying mats – 18 x 32″. That is larger than my whole kitchen counter in my trailer!
Scoop N’ Weigh, the Candy Store for Grownups!
P.S. The barrels are going and so are the caster rings. One customer bought just the caster rings and told me she was using them under her large flowerpots on the deck. Why didn’t I think of that?
P.P.S. There are forces in this world that are beyond our power, big forces like global warming and small forces like why we could not get Brown Rice Syrup for about three months. Did the crop get wiped out, is there an embargo or a conspiracy? Who knows, but Brown Rice Syrup is back in stock, until we run out.
P.P.P.S. Don’t grumble about the weather, it is beautiful out there! Spring is on its way. And if I listen intently, I can hear my trailer calling me!
